The central London commercial property market could soon be home to a new base for micro-blogging site Twitter, which is looking for new offices in the capital, it has been revealed.

Executives from the California-based social networking site were recently in London to scout for offices and visited locations in the West End and Old Street area, reports the Daily Telegraph.

A spokesman for Twitter told the newspaper: "There were a few of us in London this week. We are considering London and other European locations to create an initial and small presence in 2011."

The company's London office will not only be its European headquarters, but also Twitter's first base outside the US and will be used mainly as a sales office as the site focuses on country-by-country advertising.

A move by the firm into the capital could boost the government's intentions of establishing an east London Silicon Valley, which is being backed by £400 million of funding.
