Big Society: Villages in Wales and the West Country put the Prime Minister's words into action | Mail Online

The people in the tiny village of Llanmadoc, in the north of the Gower Peninsula, outside Swansea, know just what David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ means.
To the casual visitor, Llanmadoc might appear like any other small community in this beautiful part of Wales. Ten minutes from the coast, it has a church, pub and a cluster of whitewashed cottages.
However, the clue to what makes Llanmadoc unique lies in its shop-cum-post office. Four years ago, the shop shut down — the owners said that a population of 250, plus passing trade from tourists, did not make it a viable proposition. The locals disagreed.
‘What they lacked was commitment,’ says Randolph Jenkins, 70, the shop’s new chairman. ‘So we had a meeting in the village hall and agreed to run the shop on a co-operative basis. We negotiated terms with the Post Office and issued shares.
