My mother, Lillian, wasn't there for me at all when I was a child, as she wasn't well. I grew up an only child with my elderly granny and my father Harry in Birmingham. Dad was of the generation where it was expected you'd leave school at 14 and get a job to earn your keep, ending up as an accountant. He wanted to give me all the things he hadn't had, including a good education, researching the best ones meticulously.
