The housing market started the year on the back foot with prices edging 0.1 per cent lower during January, research has shown.

It is the fifth time in seven months that property values have fallen, figures from Nationwide revealed today, leaving the typical home costing £161,602.
This is 1.1 per cent less than in January last year, according to the bank.
The Land Registry had confirmed yesterday that prices fell 0.2 per cent in December.
