The internet is invaluable for house hunting, but it has always been easiest to use in the office or at home rather than on the move – until now.

The app is changing all that. For the uninitiated app is short for application, downloadable software for smartphones like the BlackBerry and iPhone, and slightly larger devices like the iPad. There are tens of thousands of apps on every subject – there is a Nigella Lawson recipe app, one that shows the positions of F1 cars during a Grand Prix and another saying how many ASBOs have been issued in a postcode.
