There is an oddity at the end of a row of suburban houses in Waterview, on the eastern edge of Auckland’s isthmus. Just before the city peters out and a nature reserve that overlooks the estuary begins is what looks like a cedar-clad utility building: tall and virtually featureless, apart from a horizontal sliver of upper window.
