KEY to many house moves is, of course, the price you will pay for your new home – and how much you will achieve for your current one.

Type ‘UK house prices’ into Google and a number of commercial websites come flooding on to your screen. However, most are powered from the same source: the independent UK Land Registry. Its own website is a good place to start for accurate information (the house price index covers England and Wales only for Scottish house prices visit the Registers of Scotland website). The Land Registry can show you how the house price has varied over a long period of time and for all types of property. You can also compare it with another part of the country.
