Bankrupt Katona rents £5,500-a-month mansion

Controversial TV celebrity Kerry Katona has moved into a six-bedroomed mansion in affluent Oxted, Surrey, that costs a cool £5,500 a month to rent - despite still being bankrupt.

The former Atomic Kitten member was declared bankrupt in August 2008 due to an oustanding debt of £82,000 for unpaid taxes. Her debts were reported as £417,000.

Bankruptcy orders should last for one year, followed by a 'discharge'. But these orders can be extended when a bankrupt fails to comply with all the instructions, such as continuing repayment of certain debts or failing to declare income.

The Insolvency Service confirmed to This is Money that Katona 'is still in a state of bankruptcy and her discharge has been suspended', which is now a total of 29 months rather than the usual 12.
