Housing Construction Gains in Q4 2010 While House Prices Decline

The housing construction market saw many ups and downs in different areas for the end of last year. Data from the Office for National Statistics reported that new orders in the construction were up 18 per cent in the Quarter 4 of 2010 when compared to Quarter 3 of the same year. In a year to year comparison 2010 was 3 per cent above Quarter 4 in 2009 when recovery first began from the recession.

There was no change from third quarter to fourth quarter in private sector housing. Public sector housing orders increased in the last quarter of 2010. The increase was nearly double at

£1.03 billion from the £611 million in quarter three. An increase was also seen in public non-housing construction which rose to £3.69 billion in the fourth quarter from a third quarter £2.67 billion. Private commercial construction for the fourth quarter amounted to £3.78 billion with only a slight change in increase.
