Rundown High Street? Convert it into housing | This is Money

Rundown High Streets dominated by charity shops and bookmakers should be turned into homes, a Tory think-tank said yesterday.

It called for an end to planning rules that say shops must always be shops and ban their conversion into flats or houses.
Researchers at the Policy Exchange said such a change would also mean that bookies - who are allowed to move into old estate agent or building society offices without planning permission - would no longer get an unfair advantage from the rules.
