FT.com / House & Home - Nights at the office
It is the cry of business executives worldwide that long working hours mean they spend too long in the office. In central London, that is more true than many realise. A rash of conversions of commercial buildings into luxury homes means some of the world’s most exclusive homes are now in old office blocks, warehouses and industrial buildings, from printworks to foundries.
Yet it is not the economic downturn that has led to this phenomenon. Modern health and safety requirements render many old buildings too expensive to maintain as commercial properties, while the high cost of central London real estate has made some businesses look further afield.
