Battle of the bedroom tax: Ministers support Financial Mail campaign against planning 'extortion' | Mail Online

It has been called a bedroom tax, an extension tax or just plain extortion. Town halls have taken to demanding one-off payments from homeowners to approve extensions or small building projects as they try to boost their flagging finances.
But now, after growing demands from councils were highlighted by Financial Mail, property advisers, legal experts and the Government have waded in, calling for homeowners to challenge councils.

And in an early victory for Financial Mail’s campaign, Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has pledged to change the law to put an end to what he slammed as a ‘tax on aspiration’.
