Nick Ashley-Cooper was just 25 when he inherited the title Earl of Shaftesbury, along with the 9,000-acre Shaftesbury estate in Dorset.

He had been working as a DJ and music promoter in New York, but his brother and father had died unexpectedly and in 2005 he found himself suddenly with enormous responsibilities. A slice of England, including a vast and virtually uninhabited house, had landed in his lap.

"My father had tried to downsize and then ran out of steam," he says. "Various Victorian wings were removed and it left lots of holes. The house has always been the big issue, the unresolved matter.

"It is the heart of the estate and the family, but in this era we no longer need such a massive house and must regard it more as a venue."
