Will Google Wallet end up in your pocket? | This is Money

Google has announced in the US that it plans to launch Google Wallet – a system where customers can pay using their smartphone.

Last week, This is Money revealed how Barclaycard and Orange had teamed up to provide smartphone payments for the UK public, and how it may revolutionise the way we pay for goods and service.

In basic terms, a chip inside a smartphone allows customers to top up money and then swipe over a payment scanner, much like an Oyster card in London.

In the article, we wrote that for smartphone payments to become mainstream, a big player such as Google would need to get in on the act. And it appears they may be about to.
