A major overhaul of the pay-as-you-earn system is being planned to make millions more aware of how much tax they pay.
The Treasury is also working on plans to offer every taxpayer access to their own tax 'account' via a personalised internet page.
This would give people the chance to monitor how much they are being taxed week by week, allowing them to identify errors more quickly.
