ON paper the area of Spitalfields and Shoreditch shouldn’t work as a residential area: it’s too close to the City and somewhere you might travel through, rather than to. And yet it does work: it has a fantastic sense of community with residents having tremendous pride in the area’s history – and future.

Sure, it’s been a battle between preserving that history and the juggernaut that is modern redevelopment with its faceless office blocks and branded shops. A battle that has not always been easy and yet the result to date is a masterclass in mixed development and a thriving community. Spitalfields, with its old market reinvented, has a delightful mix of shops and markets acting as a focus for residents and tourits alike. Shoreditch and its neighbour Hoxton are cutting out an identity as an arts village for both individual artists and small companies.
