SO which part of the country has seen house prices rise six months in succession? I thought you’d say that so I’m now sounding the QI klaxon with “London” flashing madly on the screen. I’m afraid London has only managed five months rise in succession – the correct answer is Wales.

Wales – the traditional kicking boy of the housing market? Wales trumpeted last month as “bottom of the UK economy league“? That’s the one. But before you celebrate this most beautiful part of Britain leading the rest of the country out of recession, the stats need some careful interpreting.

The figures from Acadametrics do show another rise by 0.3 per cent for November 2011 and that to be a rise of 0.7 per cent over the previous year. That puts the average house price in Wales now at £154,206. However, it seems the house prices are being pushed up by second home buyers or the retired who see this as a good time to buy in Wales. First time buyers are as rare in Wales as elsewhere.
