Homeowners hoping to add value to their houses though DIY are being warned it may have little impact on their property price.

More than half of homeowners, 52 per cent, are planning makeovers over the forthcoming bank holidays, such as re-decorating rooms, or laying new carpets.
But while this may improve the quality of life for those living there, the subdued property market as well as the increased cost of materials means that altering a home may not provide the same level of financial return seen in previous years, HSBC's annual Home Improvement Survey warned.
