How to spot subsidence

Insurance claims for subsidence usually rise dramatically after long spells of dry weather, though Asia Yasir at insurer esure says that not everyone who spots cracks in the paintwork should be alarmed.
‘Although cracks in the wall are one of the easiest ways to spot structural movement in buildings, the majority of small cracks turn out to be harmless,’ she says.
‘Often they can be the result of settlement as the building moves under its own weight following construction, extensions, loft conversions or refurbishment works, rather than evidence of subsidence.’
But insurers say that cracks bigger than the thickness of a 50p coin and which are wider at the top than the bottom should be checked immediately by an expert.
