The great British love affair with the country house is on again. This most desirable symbol of wealth and success, this magical setting for family life, a symphony of rooms wrapped in rural splendour, is once more beguiling ambitious young couples. International buyers may pick off the big plums by purchasing houses priced at £5 million to £8 million, but British buyers are busy with budgets of £2 million to £3 million to spend on a home to cherish.
This is still the great sentimental purchase. Savills’ data book shows that 64 per cent of country house sales are at £2 million to £3 million, and that 79 per cent of purchasers are buying as a main residence, many combining it with a London commute. Knight Frank’s latest Prime Country House Index shows that prime country house prices dropped a little in the first three months of this year. But the pace of decline is slowing, so it is perceived as a good time to buy.
