Millions Will Be Locked Out of UK Housing Market by 2020

The latest study by Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) suggests that the number of young Brits locked out of home ownership will rise by 1.5 million people.

At the same time, the number of those who will be unable to buy and even to rent and, thus, will have to stay at their parents' home, will increase by 50% to 3.7 million people.

The number of young home owners will halve by 2020 to 1.3 million people despite all the government's commitment to providing affordable homes.

Commenting on the findings, Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) experts said there are "ideological differences" between the UK regions. "The Scottish and Welsh governments and the Northern Ireland Executive are committed to the principle of subsidising the cost of housing for people who find it difficult to secure a home," said the report. The Westminster government only offers "housing benefits and social rents, which are seen as disadvantaging low income and vulnerable people."
