Will ‘mansion tax’ do to house prices what Gordon Brown did to pensions? – Telegraph Blogs

Could Liberal Democrat plans to raise taxes on property repeat the damage Labour did when it attacked pension funds 15 years ago? With house prices at current levels, that question may seem far-fetched.
But it is precisely because bricks and mortar have been the best-performing asset for most people during a dismal decade for stock markets and pensions that it is worth considering this risk before it is too late. Bear in mind that few people saw any reason to worry in July, 1997, when Gordon Brown used his first Budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer to “reform advanced corporation tax”, as he put it at the time.
