Could car sharing websites slash your travel costs? | Mail Online
Travel costs continue to escalate. Rail fares are rising year-on-year with the average cost set to rise by six per cent in January, petrol prices have doubled in the last 10 years while car insurance costs are up 50 per cent in just over six years.
All of these squeezes mean people are becoming more open to money-saving ideas when it comes to getting from A to B – whether it be for work or for pleasure.
One of the options is 'car sharing' or 'car pooling' and while sharing a lift may have been around for a long time, the growing popularity of social media-style systems means it could be about to take-off in Britain.
According to recent statistics from a Ford survey, 42 per cent of people would consider sharing cars when making a journey. But at present, just two per cent of UK drivers have used formal car sharing schemes over the past 12 months.
Currently, there are a few websites in Britain that offer car sharing services, including BlaBlaCar, Liftshare and Mylifts.
