Bryan Ferry’s son Otis admitted last week how much he envied privileged friends who inherited estates that they cared little about.
Earl Spencer is, however, hoping that his son Louis will be less blasé when he takes possession of the 14,000 acre Althorp estate in Northamptonshire.
“I’ve gently brainwashed him over the years,” Charles Spencer says, slyly. “But I’ve said to him: 'You’re a young man from a different generation and you may not want to live here, but please don’t sell it’.”
The 18-year-old will however be forgiven if the Government makes it impossible for him. “It should be in the family unless tax rates become catastrophic.
