UK gross mortgage lending last month was 10 per cent higher than a year ago, rising to its highest level in more than two years, the Council of Mortgage Lenders reported today.

The CML figures showed gross mortgage lending in August hit an estimated £13.4billion, up from £12.6billion in July and £12.1billion pounds in August 2010.

Chief economist Bob Pannell said activity levels continued to be subdued but broadly stable. He added: 'The August performance more or less offset the weaker-than-expected July figure. Taking July and August together, lending has shown little change on the same months of 2009 and 2010.'
