PRIVATE Viewing in The Independent today features a redundant lighthouse for sale with potential for residential use. Point of Ayr lighthouse is a Grade II listed property 60ft high and 18ft in diameter. The lighthouse is on the Talacre Beach, near Prestatyn in north Wales. It was originally built in 1777 but only saw service until 1844. Those wishing for an unusual home on a remote spot will no doubt be tempted but the practicalities will make the realists think twice!

But it awakened the hermit spirit in me and started me surfing the Independent property search engine for that remote retirement location. You are unlikely to get more remote than the Out Skerries islands in Shetland with its 70 inhabitants. Out Skerries (pictured above) is currently for sale with Knight Frank. The 600 acres of land is on the market for offers in excess of £400,000. It does not come with a house but you will collect the rents from 15 crofts – amounting to the princely sum of £167.18 a year
