IT’S very appropriate that Chigwell is the last area profile before Christmas. This Essex village has links with Mr Christmas himself: Charles Dickens. The author perhaps most associated with Christmas (and whose 200th birthday will be celebrated next year) described Chigwell as “the greatest place in the world”, becoming a regular visitor to Ye Olde King’s Head and marvelling at “such beautiful forest scenery” in this “out of the way rural place”.

One wonders what Dickens would make of the place today. Sure, it would be pushing it to describe it as an “out of the way rural place” now but Epping Forest remains and the village retains a charm which makes it one of the most sought after villages in Essex.

As to his Ye Olde King’s Head pub, it’s now a gastropub, the landlord is Sir Alan Sugar and it’s home to the Sheesh turkish restaurant whose decor Independent reveiwer John Walsh detailed with obvious astonishment back in June 2011.
