As of today, the North-South divide yawns a little wider. The Halifax has produced its annual survey of Britain’s 50 best places to live – and despite the firm’s Yorkshire roots, there is no room for it on the list, nor for Scotland, or Wales, or much of the rest of the kingdom. Apparently, there are only four oases of civilisation outside southern and eastern England: Rutland, Wychavon in Worcestershire, North Kesteven in Lincolnshire and Rushcliffe in Nottingham.

While there will be rejoicing in Hampshire – Hart having supplanted Elmbridge in Surrey as Britain’s des-est res – there is sure to be outrage elsewhere, not least from those convinced of the virtues of their own patches of Eden. For example, by the Halifax’s own criteria, the Western Isles can boast that they are the least crowded and least congested part of Britain, with the greatest number of teachers per pupil – and, admittedly, the greatest need for central heating.
