Cost of running a house hits £10,000 a year despite slump in mortgage repayments | Mail Online

The cost of owning and running a home is at its highest for four years – despite falling mortgage repayments.
It takes nearly £10,000 a year to keep a roof over your head, and this is before a penny is spent on a major project such as a new bathroom, replacing the boiler or changing the carpets.
The figure comes in a report from the Halifax and confirms the experience of millions of homeowners who have found they can barely afford to pay the household bills.
The report, published today, shows that housing costs an average of £9,393 a year – a total that homeowners rarely add up for themselves.
This includes everything from the monthly mortgage bill, council tax, water, electricity, gas, garden tools, cleaning products and household insurance.
It is the biggest total since 2008, when the figure was £9,406.
The fact that bills have reached their highest level for four years is extraordinary, given the fact that average mortgage repayments have slumped.
