Generation rent could lead to benefits 'explosion' - Telegraph

By the time those currently in their early 20s reach retirement, the number of people forced to rely on housing benefit could almost triple, according to the thinktank the Strategic Society Centre.
An ageing population combined with lower rates of property ownership would leave a future a generation of pensioners more reliant than ever on the state, it predicts.
The current clutch of young adults have been nicknamed “generation rent” after a series of studies suggested that Britain is changing from a nation of home owners into a continental-style society where renting is the norm.
A recent report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation estimated that more than a million people under 30 will be unable to get on the housing ladder by the end of the decade, with half a million living with their parents.
In 1997 over 40 per cent of adults under 30 owned their own home, with only 30 per cent renting.
