Have we got mews for you? - Telegraph
Lords and ladies might still rule in Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs, but in the property world the servants are taking their revenge. Mews houses – staff quarters and stables once owned by Britain’s grandest families – are back in fashion.
Estate agents say mews, built in the 1800s and 1900s for staff, horses and coaches, are in high demand because of their relative good value and potential for growth.
They were the “back ends” of grand town houses in many of central London’s finest squares and they typically line two sides of narrow cobbled lanes. Most ooze charm, many have garages and almost all have well-documented histories attached to them.
