Piling into the latest investment craze can cost you dearly, as tech investors in the late 90s found. The best returns can often come from not following the herd.
Funds that focus on out-of-favour stocks and sectors – often called 'special situations' or 'opportunities' funds – do just that.
Darius McDermott, managing director of discount broker Chelsea Financial Services, says: 'As a general rule, when everyone starts piling into a stock it's time to get out. Special situations funds are attractive as they seek companies that are both unloved and, importantly, undervalued.'
