The Right Honourable Michael Portillo told delegates at the Chartered Institute of Housing SW Conference in Torquay last week that the UK needs more owner occupiers and less social housing to ease the economic and housing crisis in the UK.
“The unprecedented rise in housing prices over the past decade has created an unequal society, one of the haves and have nots, the property owners and the class that will never get on the property ladder,” he said.
He called for lower house prices and house price stability over the coming years to erode the differential between house owners and the £1.4 million renters who aspire to home ownership.
