According to mortgage lender Santander, which commissioned the survey, half of people aged between 18 and 34 who want to buy a new home over the next two years think the aim is unrealistic.

Getting finance is the main problem, with the need for a bigger deposit, the current low value of an existing property and being able to get a suitable mortgage all cited as major barriers to moving.

Over 70% of the people questioned were still in their first property, with a third in the same place for more than five years despite the vast majority expecting to have moved by now.
