Following the recent riots, you would think the last thing Mancunians want right now is to see their city centre turned into a playground for reckless thrill seekers – but that’s exactly what they’ll be welcoming this weekend.

Motor racing team McLaren Mercedes will be in the city centre across the bank holiday weekend as part of Vodafone’s Show of Speed, an event billed as a ‘Formula One festival’.

A bespoke go-kart track, an F1 simulator and a full-size pit garage housing one of their British manufactured F1 cars are among the attractions. The highlight of the weekend will be an appearance from former world champion and current McLaren driver Jenson Button on Monday 29 August.
