Brideshead Revisited property pips Downton Abbey to world's greatest house | Metro.co.uk

The North Yorkshire property, used in the 1980s ITV series Brideshead Revisited, is described as ‘breathtakingly stately’ in the list of the planet’s best mansions and grand houses.

Highclere Castle in Berkshire, where Downton Abbey is filmed, does not feature in the top ten.

‘Stately homes may be two a penny in England but you’ll have to try pretty hard to find one as breathtakingly stately as Castle Howard,’ according to the list.

The great mansions category is one in the Lonely Planet’s new 1,000 Ultimate Sights book, which includes British and Irish entries.
