I DON’T suppose I was the only one drooling over the thatched cottage pictured in Private Viewing in The Independent. The Grade II listed thatched cottage is in Bishopstone, Buckinghamshire and is on the market for £449,000.

Thatched cottages epitomise the perfect English home and with an estimated 60,000 around the country there’s plenty of choice for those hoping to buy that ‘chocolate-box’ property. And it also means the ancient craft of thatching is alive and well. The website of the National Society of Master Thatchers will give you advice on repair or replacement of thatch roofs and also lists their members.
