The upkeep and maintenance of ageing listed buildings is having a crippling effect and forcing owners to find ever more innovative ways of bringing in visitors.

Members of the Historic Houses Association (HHA) appealed to the Government yesterday not to add to their economic burden by introducing a ‘mansion tax’.

Edward Harley, president of the HHA, said: “The economic backdrop is extraordinarily tough for our members.

“Owners already spend £140 million maintaining their properties but they need to spend an additional £20 million just to stand still.
