News & Star | News | ‘Get sellers to pay stamp duty to help first-timers buy a property’
STAMP duty should be paid on the property you are selling, not purchasing, in an attempt to allow first-time buyers to get on the market, an MP has said.
As it stands buyers pay the tax on the property they are purchasing, but Carlisle MP John Stevenson wants people to pay it on the property they are selling.
The Conservative MP argues it would still generate the same revenue but would free all first-time buyers from the tax and allow others to move into bigger properties.
