What will bring life back to the housing market? - Telegraph

What will bring life back to the housing market? - Telegraph

Signs of life in a moribund housing market used to be one of the more reliable indicators that spring had arrived. But despite the unseasonably warm weather this year, the signals from the property market are a lot harder to read.

House prices are continuing to edge downwards in many parts of the country. According to the Halifax, the average house price is 3pc lower than it was last April, and almost 20pc off the peak in April 2007. The average house, worth almost £200,000 four years ago, would now sell for less than £163,000. However, this is still 5pc above the low reached in 2009, when the same property was worth just £154,000.
