First-time buyers with small savings were given a boost this week as banks cut mortgage rates.

Those with a 15 per cent deposit can get a two-year fix with HSBC at 3.99 per cent, with a £899 fee. Monthly repayments on a £ 150,000 mortgage would be £791, and total cost would be £19,883.

Norwich & Peterborough has been offering the same rate for a while, but with a fee at £995, making a total cost of £19,979.
