Online House Hunter: Code of Essex | Alan Cleaver | Independent Property Blogs

IT would seem the only way is Essex for many house-hunters with the county’s house prices experiencing good growth in the last ten years. The Independent’s Ruth Bloomfield took a look at Colchester in her feature, The Only Way Is Essex? but there’s plenty more to the county than the town at the far eastern edge of the county.

In addition to the major towns of Chelmsford and Colchester there are historic towns such as Southend-on-sea and new towns such as Basildon and Harlow. There’s the convenience of road and rail links in to London, and Stansted Airport or the joys of Lakeside Shopping Centre, Epping Forest and seaside resorts such as Clacton-on-Sea. It’s a county of contrasts with the densely populated suburbia nestling close to central London at odds with the untouched rural countryside to be found in the north of the county.

Land Registry figures show the average house price in August 2001 coming in at £110,772.
