Council housing applicants to be screened over other properties - Telegraph

Grant Shapps, the housing minister, is this week issuing new instructions to councils after discovering that nearly 60,000 people living in council houses also own property.

An estimated 1.8 million people are currently on a waiting list for either council or social housing, and Mr Shapps said it was unacceptable for so many council houses to be allocated to people who already own property.

“Social housing is a precious resource – I want to be confident that it is allocated to the people in the greatest need,” he said.
