The total number of home repossessions this year is likely to be lower than lenders previously forecast as figures for the latest quarter rose less than expected.

The number of properties taken into possession by mortgage lenders in the third quarter of this year was 9,200, virtually unchanged from 9,100 in the second quarter, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).

So far this year, 27,500 properties have been taken into possession, which is four per cent less than the equivalent period last year.
