When MIke Slade joined Helical Bar in 1984, the company, formed in 1919 as a maker of steel reinforcing for the construction industry, was struggling. It was in financial difficulties and seeking new lines of business.
Mr Slade joined the board as a commercial property man with 15 years experience, and reversed his small property venture into Helical Bar. At the end of 1986, the steel reinforcement business was sold to its management, leaving a property development and investment company, with Mr Slade as chief executive
