WHAT size bribe would you need to be encouraged to sell your delightful home in suburbia and move to a less desirable inner city area? I suspect slightly more than the £7,600 being offered by Washington’s city officials in their ‘Live Near Your Work’ programme.

I’m grateful to The Academy of Urbanism and an article by Ariel Schwartz for the heads-up about this initiative which has very worthy intentions. After all, people living near their work place would help regenerate run-down areas in city centres, cut down on pollution, employees have an easier time getting to and from work – and the bosses see you arrive on time each morning.

Could it work in the UK? I doubt it and – as Ariel Schwartz points out – it might be cheaper just spending money on the run-down areas to make them more appealing. ....
