Online House Hunter: Richmond delights | Alan Cleaver | Independent Property Blogs
IT’S not just for snobbish reasons that Richmond is generally referred to as Richmond upon Thames. There’s another Richmond – in Yorkshire – so you don’t want to get the two confused.
Strictly speaking, Richmond is the town and Richmond upon Thames is the borough. A metropolitan borough these days although many people prefer to still put it in the county of Surrey.
There’s a royal image about Richmond – and its Royal history helps explain why there’s a Richmond in North Yorkshire and another down by the Thames. Henry VII had a palace built beside the River in 1501 and in recognition of his ancestral home, Richmond Castle in Yorkshire, named it Richmond Palace. The town that grew up around the palace also became known as Richmond. There. All clear now?
