Ten years ago, Cornwall was a hot destination. What’s happened since then? The surf is still up, the restaurants have improved, and on the 6.03pm First Great Western train from Paddington the long journey can be passed eating a convivial meal. The difference is that property prices have fallen by at least 25 per cent from the 2007 peak, and if you are living in the South East, houses look distinctly better value. There’s a striking number of dreamy places on the market at the moment, all of which, in these worried times, would seem to offer a beguilingly relaxed quality of life.
The windows of the Truro agent Lillicrap Chilcott are crowded with smart-looking rectories and farmhouses. No 4 Cross St, a former vicarage at Helston, is a town house of stunning architectural quality, with seven bedrooms, two-bedroom annexe and half an acre of garden; Lillicrap Chilcott is asking for offers around £8 75,000, which wouldn’t buy more than a three-bedroom maisonette in Hammersmith.
